Waldorf Red Cake

Waldorf Red Cake

Cake

Shortening 1/2 Cup
Sugar 1 1/2 Cups
Eggs 2
Red Food Coloring 1 oz.
Vanilla 1 tsp.
Salt 1 tsp.
Buttermilk 1 Cup
Cake Flour 2 1/4 Cups
Soda 1 tsp.
Vinegar 1 Tbsp.
Cocoa 2 Tbsp.

Add vinegar to soda. Cream shortening, sugar and eggs; make paste of coloring, cocoa and add to mixture. Alternate milk with flour and salt; add vinegar and soda. Do not beat hard, just blend. Bake 30 minutes at 350°. Cool. Cut each layer through to make four layers.

Icing

Flour 3 Tbsp.
Sugar 1 Cup
Butter 1 Cup
Milk 1 Cup
Vanilla 1 tsp.
Powdered Sugar 1/4 Pound

Cook flour and milk until thick. Cool. Cream butter, sugar and vanilla until very fluffy. Add to milk and flour mixture. Do no beat too long. Ice cake.
